Oxbow's Anderson advances to finals of U.S. Girls Junior golf tournament

BEDMINSTER, N.J. – Amy Anderson has reached the finals of the U.S. Girls Junior Golf Championship after a pair of victories on Friday.

Anderson, of Oxbow, N.D., defeated Columbia's Luz Alejandra Cangrejo 1-up in 19 holes in the semifinals, and beat Victoria Tanco 2 and 1 in the quarterfinals at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminister, N.J.

The 36-hole final match between Anderson and Kimberly Kim of Hawaii will be played Saturday.

This is Anderson’s second time appearing in the U.S. Girls Juniors. She is 17 years old and plans to attend North Dakota State University.

Anderson battled back from a three-hole deficit against Cangrejo to advance to the finals.

On Thursday, Anderson overcame an inconsistent putter, terrible weather conditions and two top-flight competitors to make it to the final eight women in the field. She defeated Isabelle Lendl and Alison Lee both 1-up to advance to the quarterfinals.

Anderson is the tournament’s medalist after shooting a 3-under, 141 in qualifying.
