Revelers rescue ducklingGuests at a south Fargo children’s party had a surprise visit from a lame duck candidate Sunday afternoon.
Party guests at the Rodney and Margaret Harris home, 2704 32nd St. S., were visiting in the backyard about 3 p.m. when someone noticed a mother duck and her eight ducklings swimming across one of the lakes in the Bluemont Lakes neighborhood, according to Fargo police reports.
The duckling at the end of the queue lagged behind, and there seemed to be something wrong with its leg.
Party guests noticed the last duck actually had a large rat trap caught on one leg, said Fargo Community Service Officer Sara Fix.
When the trapped duckling emerged from the water with the other ducks, party guests approached the duckling to help it. At one point, the mother duck hurried over and pecked at the trap, as if trying to free her offspring, Fix said.
Although Fix had been contacted and was en route to rescue the water fowl, someone else first stepped in on the scene of the “quack-cident.”
Party guest Janelle Schneekloth of St. Cloud Minn., was able to get a hold of the duckling and remove the trap.
Although the duckling limped a bit, it immediately followed its family back into the water to swim.
That’s what they call a clean bill of health.
