West Fargo board foments mistrustAs a lifelong resident of West Fargo and raising children in the West Fargo School District, it is disturbing to see that the School Board and school administration have developed an air of invincibility when dealing with the teachers, students and now with the public.
After attending the School Board meeting on Monday, July 13, we still have not heard why a teacher was removed as an adviser to the high school newspaper. School Board President Tom Gentzkow read a prepared statement to all in attendance that stated “this was never about what was written,” in regard to the controversy surrounding the adviser’s removal.
As a taxpayer who lives in the school district and is responsible for the state funding of the district through tax dollars, the response from the School Board president was unacceptable. If it was not about what the students had written, then what was the reason for the adviser’s removal?
The School Board has cast itself as omnipotent and arrogant in this situation by not coming forth to explain to the taxpayers of the district why this action was taken against a young, vibrant teacher.
The board and Gentzkow must have forgotten who placed them in their jobs in the first place. That’s unfortunate, considering the residents of West Fargo have entrusted them to make fair and impartial decisions.
Unless there is more clarification to this simmering issue, the public will continue to look at the School Board’s decisions with a wary eye.
