Man arrested in connection with drive-by shooting released from prison in February
WAHPETON, N.D. — A man arrested in connection with a “drive-by style” shooting here Wednesday night was released from prison five months ago after serving time for a 2006 stabbing.
Andrew Lopez, 28, originally faced an attempted murder charge in connection with the April 11, 2006 stabbing of two men in Wahpeton, but pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of aggravated assault with a dangerous weapon in exchange for a three-year sentence, according to court records and Forum archives.
Lopez and his roommate, Crystal Garcia, were arrested Wednesday night in Breckenridge, Minn., after police stopped the suspect vehicle. Garcia was driving and Lopez was her passenger, Breckenridge Police Chief Steve Rensvold said.
Authorities say a man in a vehicle fired several shots from a handgun toward a residence shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday at 905 Harrison Road. Several people were inside, including eight children, but authorities say no one was hurt.
Authorities recovered a .22-caliber handgun inside the vehicle, believed to have been used in the shooting.
Felony charges are pending against the Garcia and Lopez, both 28, who live at 1311 3rd Ave. N. in Wahpeton, Rensvold said.
A hearing regarding extradition is scheduled for this morning.
Lopez was released from prison on Feb. 1, according to the North Dakota State Penitentiary.
