MSUM releases Division I ice hockey business plan

Minnesota State University Moorhead needs more than $10 million in startup funds if the school is to launch a Division I ice hockey program, school President Edna Szymanski said today.

Szymanski came to that price range after reviewing a 19-page business plan that was prepared by an 11-person campus exploratory committee.

“I think the real issue for us is will we have the money together to move forward,” Szymanski said. “I want enough so that we’re not penny pinching.”

Szymanski said she expects a decision at the end of December on whether the school moves forward or not with Division I ice hockey.

Szymanski added she would consider starting a program as an independent or in a conference other than the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

The plan concludes, “Now is the most opportune time to start Division I Dragon Hockey at MSUM.”
