Minnesota state high school baseball: Otters finals boundST. CLOUD, Minn. – Fergus Falls is making this look easy.
The Otters scored a pair of 11-1 victories at the Minnesota Class 2A state baseball tournament to advance to today’s championship game.
“It was an amazing run today,” said Otters head coach Mark Aho. “Up and down the lineup, one through nine, we were hitting.
“When we needed a hit, we got it. When we needed a bunt, we got that too. It was everybody.”
Fergus Falls will play La Crescent at 5:30 p.m. today at Dick Putz Field for the Class 2A title.
The Otters needed just 11 innings to score their two wins.
Fergus Falls earned an 11-1 win in six innings over Mora, getting six runs in the fourth to set things up.
Jake Heck struck out 10 in the first-round win, and went 3-for-4 at the plate.
“He struck out the first three batters he faced and that set the tone for the whole game,” Aho said.
Joe Anderson followed suit in the second game, striking out the side to start the game for an 11-1 semifinal win over Orono in five innings.
Anderson struck out seven and gave up just three hits against Orono. Matt Mithaugen was 3-for-4 with four RBIs in the semifinal victory, which featured a nine-run fifth inning.
“Everybody was feeding off each other,” Aho said. “Both games were a total team effort, and that’s contagious.”
