Critic would do better to help out

I have just read the letter by Carl P. Cherak commenting on how appalled he was that the ceremony at the Veterans Memorial Bridge on Memorial Day had only five rifles. I am the bugler in the photo. I played at the bridge, the Memorial Hall and five cemeteries on Memorial Day.

I volunteered to play Taps at somewhere around 60 funerals last year, some as far away as Minot, Bis-marck and Minneapolis.

Cherak says he is a veteran, yet I didn’t see him at the bridge or any of the cemeteries. We struggle to get enough rifles every time we do a funeral or color guard activity. We do what we can with what we have to work with. Cherak could help. He could get active in a veterans group and join a color guard. I think he would change his tune.

Talk is cheap. Anyone can criticize. Rather than be “appalled,” maybe he should join the effort, bring a veteran friend, volunteer his time and help remedy the “appalling” situation. I’ll bet he’ll change your tune.
