Authorities identify Grand Forks man who shot himselfGRAND FORKS, N.D. - A Grand Forks man who shot himself in the leg is in satisfactory condition today at Altru Hospital.
Patrick Jon Vaneps, 22, told police that a round accidentally went off as he was trying to fix his 9 mm Luger pistol that was not cycling ammo properly.
Vaneps called 911 Monday afternoon, and officers responded to the 1400 block of 10th Avenue North. Police had to force open a locked door to get inside Vaneps' main-floor apartment.
Vaneps was found in a bedroom with a gunshot wound to his upper leg, just above the knee. He was taken to Altru in an ambulance.
Sgt. Kevin Kallinen said the bullet became lodged in Vaneps' leg and did not affect any neighbors.
