Minnesota city investigating its police chief after case of illegal dumpingLA CRESCENT, Minn. -- The city of La Crescent is investigating its police chief after he wrote himself a ticket for dumping some brush at a city site after it was closed.
It happened April 25, when 45-year-old Chief Todd Nelson said he dropped off some brush after clearing it for a disabled city resident.
The site was closed when he arrived at 4:30 p.m., so he dumped the brush, assessed himself a $50 fine and paid it. He says he did it because if anyone complained, he'd be covered.
However, the city code says that what Nelson did could be misdemeanor trespassing -- not the lesser violation that he ticketed himself for.
City Administrator Bill Waller says the incident is being investigated to see whether disciplinary action is appropriate.
