ND airman found guilty of aggravated assault

GRAND FORKS, N.D. - A Grand Forks Air Force Base sergeant has been convicted of aggravated assault in a downtown Grand Forks street fight that involved a former trainer of North Dakota boxer Virgil Hill.

Twenty-five-year-old David Exelbert was accused of using brass knuckles to hit and injure 43-year-old Allen Larsien late last September.

Exelbert testified that he recalled putting on the brass knuckles but not who threw the first punch in the fight. His attorney said Exelbert was defending himself.

Prosecutor Jason McCarthy told jurors that Exelbert hit Larsien "for no reason" and left lasting scars.

Exelbert faces up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine when he is sentenced on the felony charge July 8.
