Friends elated with Saberi’s reported release

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) – Friends of imprisoned American journalist Roxana Saberi were elated today with a report that she’ll be freed and can leave Iran immediately.

Saberi, a 32-year-old dual American-Iranian national, was convicted last month of spying for the United States and sentenced to eight years in prison. Her lawyer says an appeals court suspended the sentence.

The former 1997 Miss North Dakota was arrested in late January.

Marilyn McGinley, president of the Miss North Dakota pageant, says justice has been served.

Marianna Malm, Saberi’s former English teacher at Fargo North High School, says she has been “crying tears of joy.”

Malm says she’s happy for Saberi’s family. She says Saberi’s imprisonment must have been a “nightmare” for them.
