Suspect in Moorhead rest stop stabbing civilly committed

MOORHEAD – A judge here has civilly committed a Canadian man accused of nearly stabbing another man to death.

Harmit Bhangu, 32, suffers from bipolar disorder with psychotic features and is mentally ill and dangerous, Clay County District Court Galen Vaa ruled today.

Bhangu is accused of attempted murder for the Jan. 11 incident at a rest stop near Moorhead.

Bhangu told police God ordered him to kill the other man, and also told psychologists examining him that he was acting in self defense, according to testimony today.

Bhangu will now be committed to a Minnesota hospital for an indeterminate period of time. A review hearing in the case will be held in about 60 days.
