Northwood schools rethink superintendent roleThe Northwood School District will consider reducing its superintendent’s job from a full-time to a half- or part-time position.
The School Board has set a special meeting for 7 p.m. today.
“We’re exploring finances,” School Board Member Erik Thorsgard said, adding that budget concerns may make it necessary to reduce the superintendent’s position.
To do that, the board would have to decide to not renew the full-time position of Superintendent Kevin Coles.
“It’s not a beef with him,” Thorsgard said. “It’s the budget.”
Coles started as superintendent in the summer of 2007, just 20 days before a tornado ripped through Northwood and destroyed the school.
Since then, he has overseen school operations that have moved to nearby Hatton, N.D., where Northwood and Hatton students have shared facilities.
Northwood has about 280 students.
The Northwood School District currently is building a new $14 million school on the west edge of town. It is scheduled to be completed in time for high school graduation next month and to be open for classes in the fall.
