U18 roundup: Russia gets past Slovakia

Russia shook off its opening loss in a hurry, blasting Slovakia 7-2 on Saturday at Urban Plains Center.

Vladimir Tarasenko had two goals and two assists for the Russians, who moved to 1-1 in the IIHF World U18 Championship.

Russia also got a pair of goals from Maxim Kitsyn, and Dimitri Orlov had a goal and two assists. Andrej Stastny and Miroslav Bobocky scored goals for Slovakia in the loss.

Sweden 5, Germany 4

Sweden is still unbeaten at the U18 tournament, but it was close.

The Swedes survived a late surge by Germany, but held on for a 5-4 victory.

Sweden took a 5-2 lead early in the third period on a goal from Magnus Svensson Paajarvi, and it was a good thing they did. Germany rattled off a pair of power-play goals just 2:40 apart to slice the lead to one goal.

Svensson Paajarvi finished with a goal and an assist, while Tim Erixon had three assists for Sweden. Marc El-Sayed had two goals for Germany in the loss.
