Forum editorial: Take a break for world-class U18 tournament

Welcome teams, coaches, families and fans to a truly world-class sporting event: the World Under 18 Hockey Championships at the Urban Plains Center in Fargo and the Moorhead Sports Center.

The event is a big deal for a couple of reasons. First, it’s the first time this major tournament is being played outside of Europe, and it’s come to Fargo-Moorhead.

Second, the tournament will showcase the new Urban Plains Center, which already has established a reputation as one of the finest ice hockey facilities in the Upper Midwest. In Moorhead, the sports center has been refurbished, and it’s an excellent venue.

The tournament is especially noteworthy because of the flood of 2009.

While the flood fight looks to be mostly won, the hockey event is an opportunity to take a break from sandbag and cleanup work. And what better way to put aside the flood for a while than seeing teams from all over the world play hockey?

Again, welcome to Fargo-Moorhead. Congratulations to those who worked hard to bring the tournament here.
