Johnson, Cougars earn third place in Class 1A state boys basketball

ST. PAUL – Yuri Johnson had been Ada-Borup’s most reliable scorer all weekend, and he came through again on Saturday.

Johnson hit a pair of free throws with 6 seconds left to boost the Cougars to a 60-58 win over Chisholm in the third-place game at the Minnesota Class 1A state boys basketball tournament.

Johnson finished with 18 points and six assists to lead the Cougars (27-5) to the win at Concordia-St. Paul’s Gangelhoff Center.

The Cougars had a balanced offensive effort, getting 11 points from Tyler Narum, 10 from Mark Mitteness and nine from Blake Bueng.

Ada-Borup led by as many as 13 points in the second half, but Chisholm had a big charge midway through the final 18 minutes.

Down 50-38 with 10 minutes, 44 seconds to go, the Bluestreaks scored 10 unanswered points to cut the lead to two, and they tied the game at 56-56with 2:10 to play.

But Johnson’s late free throws broke the tie and gave Ada-Borup third place.

Chisholm (30-3) was led by Taylor Skoglund’s 21 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
