Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton's Johnson survives first-round scare at Minnesota state wrestling tournament
The Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton junior should be careful what he wishes for.
At 145 pounds, Johnson scored a reversal with just eight seconds left in the final period to score a 6-5 decision over Paynesville’s Justin Wendlandt in the first round of the individual tournament at Xcel Energy Center.
“I kind of wanted a close match to get me prepared for the next one, but that was too close,” Johnson said. “It’s a lot different being here out in the bright lights. It’s way different.”
Johnson was one of three Rebels to win their first-round matches.
Tayler Yliniemi notched a technical fall at 4 minutes over Royalton-Upsala’s Dan Gadacz at 189, and Logan Rinke pinned Holdingford’s John Scepaniak in 1:34 at 285.
Yliniemi is ranked second at 189, and he will take on top-ranked Joel Bauman of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg in today’s quarterfinals.
“I knew coming in that I could bump into him pretty early,” Yliniemi said. “But he’s a guy I was going to have to beat some time if I was going to win it. This weight class is tough.”
Spuds take two
Both Moorhead wrestlers that qualified won their first-round matches.
Ben Gaughan overcame a nervous start to beat Owatonna’s Tyler Thomas in a 14-7 decision at 152.
“I was stiff all day, but I loosened up enough and started shooting,” Gaughan said. “It helps a lot to get into a bit of a rhythm in your first match down here.”
At 215, Mark Wychor cruised past Robbinsdale Armstrong’s Bronson Kittleson with a 9-3 decision.
Wychor wrestles Albert Lea’s Ethan Reed in the quarterfinals. Reed is ranked ninth in the weight class. Gaughan has Tartan’s Troy Morisette next, and Morisette is ranked 10th in the weight class.
Perham starts strong
Five of Perham’s six individual qualifiers advanced to the quarterfinals.
Jacob Werner (119), Dwight Jenne (140), Charlie Schmitz (160), Nate Schmitz (171) and Casey Sazama (215) all moved on.
Sam Warne was upended by Delano’s Dalton Sowers in the first round. Warne was ranked fourth at 125 going into the tournament.
Elissa Reinsma of Fulda-Murray County was the first girl to compete at the Minnesota state tournament, but she dropped a 9-2 decision to Jacoby Bergeron of Thief River Falls-Goodridge at 103 in Class 2A. …Team quarterfinals begin at 9:30 a.m. today, while the individual quarterfinals continue at 4 p.m. … Just two of Frazee’s seven individual qualifiers advanced (Mike Lucero at 140, and Cody Nunn at 171). …Fergus Falls’ Colton Thorson (215) and Josh Campion (285) won their first-round matches.
