ND state boys hockey roundup: Bruins cruise to 1st-round win
The Bruins scored three power-play goals en route to a 6-0 win against Bismarck Century in the first round of the North Dakota state boys hockey tournament at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
“That’s one of the biggest things we’ve seen an improvement on in the last couple weeks is our power play,” first-year South coach David Benson said.
Goals by Josh Huguelet, Tyler Sorenson and Peter Orson put the Bruins ahead 3-0 in the first period.
Orson’s goal came on the Bruins’ third power-play opportunity of the game.
“I think the guys went into the locker room and thought they had made it,” Benson said. “… That’s maybe a reason we came out (in the second) and got only one goal. Overall, it was kind of a letdown in the second. We can’t have that. It’s too late in the year to have those letdowns.”
Senior defenseman David Burdick made it 4-0 with 2 minutes, 3 seconds remaining in the second period.
Josh Hooey and Sorenson ended the Bruins’ scoring with a pair of power-play goals in the third.
The Bruins will face Grand Forks Red River in the final semifinal of the night today at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
Goaltender Scott Buchholz, who had a 1.64 goals against average during the regular season, finished with 16 saves to secure his third shutout of the year.
Freshman Aaron Nelson had 45 saves for the Patriots.
Burdick had a goal and two assists to lead the Bruins.
“(Buchholz) has been a guy who has been there all along,” Benson said. “He deserves more credit than we’re giving him. He’s been a heck of a force for this team. Maybe it’s time for the guys to start playing a little more for him instead of relying on him so much.”
