MeritCare CEO plans to retire

Dr. Roger Gilbertson announced Tuesday that he will retire by the end of 2009 after 16 years as MeritCare’s chief executive officer.

Gilbertson, 72, became MeritCare’s top executive in 1992 and is the only person to hold that position.

“This decision is bittersweet for me, but I leave confident that MeritCare is well-poised for the future,” Gilbertson said in a statement released Tuesday evening.

A neuroradiologist, Gilbertson practiced medicine for 30 years. He once owned a medical imaging company in Fargo and was affiliated with The Neuropsychiatric Institute and Fargo Clinic.

He said the creation of a coordinated health system, MeritCare Health System, with a regional network covering an area the size of the state of New York, stands as one of his most notable accomplishments.

“I take great pride in the work being done throughout the organization, across departments and locations, to ensure patient-focused care is delivered all day, every day.” Gilbertson said in the statement.

Gilbertson, a native of Lake Park, Minn., graduated from Concordia College and the University of Minnesota Medical School.
