Local DJ is growl behind bad guys in game trailer
But the moonlighting he did for Machinima, a company that makes video-game-related videos, had Jacobs in a role his DJ duties never call for – the embodiment of evil.
Jacobs, who has been the morning-show host of The Fox 107.9 FM for 15 years, voices the parts of two orcs and the Mouth of Sauron in two of the trailers for video game “Lord of the Rings: Conquest,” which was released last week. It didn’t pay much, but Jacobs is OK with that. He says he would have been happy to do it for free just to get his foot in the door.
“Dude, it’s just awesome to be a part of it,” says Jacobs, a 42-year-old and an avid gamer. “Just to work with anything (J.R.R.) Tolkien (the author of the books the game is based on),?that’s one of the first things I ever read.”
Jacobs got the parts for the "Conquest" trailers via an online audition after seeing them listed on a Web site for voiceover work, a side job he's been exploring for about six months.
To do the voices of the three evil characters - including both a "toady" orc and a leader "orc" Jacobs says he got physically involved "to get the push of the air and the inflection right."
"It's almost like method acting," he says.
He?s hoping the gig will lead to more voiceover work with Machinima, which has also done videos of games such as "World of Warcraft," "Halo" and "Grand Theft Auto."
