Fort Totten man sentenced in assault

A Fort Totten man has been sentenced to nearly six years in prison for beating another man with a lamp.

Milo Whitetail was charged with assault resulting in serious bodily injury for the March attack on his cousin, Calvin Whiteman. Authorities say Whiteman required facial reconstruction surgery and lost vision in one eye.

U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson sentenced the 45-year-old Whitetail to five years and 11 months in prison. Whitetail was ordered to pay nearly $125,000 to Indian Health Services and $3,000 to Whiteman.

Whitetail pleaded guilty in October.
