Harsh conditions close roads, businesses

Deadly windchills and heavy snow forced many roads and businesses in the region to close today, including that retail Mecca, the West Acres Shopping Center in Fargo.

Interstate 29 was closed from the South Dakota border to Canada and Interstate 94 was closed from Jamestown, N.D., to Fergus Falls, Minn.

Highway 210 from Fergus Falls to Breckenridge, Minn., was also closed.

Highway 10 between Dilworth and Detroit Lakes, Minn., closed as well, but that didn’t stop people from trying to get through, according to Clay County Sheriff Bill Bergquist, who manned a roadblock in Dilworth.

He said he turned back several eastbound vehicles, including a car carrying two people who said they were trying to get to Bemidji, Minn., before their car got stuck in the ditch near Dilworth.

The city of Moorhead declared a snow emergency just before noon Sunday.

The move gives police authority to tow any vehicles abandoned in the road or parked in emergency snow routes.

Just before noon Sunday, the West Fargo Police Department announced that the city’s Street Department that it had pulled its plows off the streets until weather conditions improved.

West Fargo Police advised no travel in the city.
