Train derails outside Page

PAGE, N.D. – Several train cars carrying fuel derailed and caught on fire this afternoon outside Page, N.D.

"Our major concern was immediately the safety in the area and the safety of the community of Page," Cass County Sheriff Paul Laney said. "We didn’t know what was in those cars."

About 30 Burlington Northern Santa Fe railway cars were traveling westbound when six or seven cars derailed as they turned a curve about a mile east and a mile south of Page.

One car full of methane gas caught on fire and two cars with liquified petroleum also burned.

The Page Fire Department, Cass County Sheriff’s Office, North Dakota Highway Patrol and Burlington Northern crew were all on the scene.

After speaking with hazardous materials experts, authorities determined that the town didn't need to evacuate. Also, no injuries were reported.

"The big thing is everybody’s safe; nobody was hurt," Laney said. "And that’s the key for us right now."
