BREAKING NEWS: Carlson expected to plead guilty to killing sister; trial canceled

A teenager accused of killing his sister last summer scheduled to face trial Monday is now expected to change his plea to guilty.

Sergei Isaac Carlson, 16, will enter an open plea Monday in Cass County District Court, according to a news release.

Carlson is charged with murder and a deviate sexual act for his 16-year-old sister Whitney’s death last July.

Jury selection had been set to begin at 9 a.m. Monday in Bismarck. The trial has now been canceled.

Carlson previously pleaded guilty to murder in a deal that called for a 30-year sentence, but the judge rejected that deal saying there was no guarantee of rehabilitation.

The plea Carlson will make Monday is not part of the previous plea agreement, meaning the judge has more discretion for sentencing.
