DETROIT LAKES, Minn. – No one was injured in a fire that damaged two garages and two houses here Monday.
The fire was reported about 9:15 p.m. and substantially damaged the home of the Bode family at 318 Elizabeth St.
The fire started in a detached garage and spread to the house, Detroit Lakes Fire Chief Jeff Swanson said. The garage was a total loss.
The flames also partially damaged a neighbor’s garage and house before firefighters extinguished it.
Families in both houses escaped the fire unharmed.
Witnesses said flames from the garage fire were 20 to 30 feet high at one point. The smoke and emergency sirens brought out a large crowd of neighbors and spectators.
The cause of the fire was not yet known Tuesday morning, Swanson said. Total damage is estimated at about $100,000.
