Snowmobile accident claims life of Fargo man

HARWOOD, N.D. – A Fargo man was killed and another man injured after a snowmobile accident near here.

The deceased was identified as 45-year-old Mark John Paulson. The injured man, 42-year-old Timothy John Heley of Horace, suffered unknown injuries and was taken by life flight to Fargo's MeritCare Hospital.

The crash, which involved two snowmobiles, happened about a quarter mile south of Harwood sometime after 10:30 p.m. Thursday. The men were discovered by a passerby about 8:45 this morning.

The Cass County Sheriff's Office said it is unclear exactly when the crash occurred and continues to investigate it. The Sheriff's Office released the victims' names shortly after noon.

The men, each riding a snowmobile, struck a drainage embankment, apparently while traveling at a high rate of speed, said Sheriff's Deputy Joe Crawford.

It wasn’t clear whether the snowmobilers didn’t see the drainage ditch or were deliberately trying to jump it and fell short, he said.

A helicopter ambulance took Heley to MeritCare.
