Severe water main leak closes streetA severe water main leak this morning forced the city of Fargo to quickly close the southbound lanes of Fourth Street South between First Avenue South and Second Street South by the downtown YMCA.
“It’s on one of the main (water) lines,” said Ben Dow, city engineering technician.
Northbound traffic also was reduced from two lanes to one lane in the same stretch of Fourth Street South.
Crews were trying to locate the leak under the concrete street, Dow said. The lane closures are necessary because the leaking water can create washouts under the concrete, he said.
Traffic is being detoured to Seventh Street via First and Sixth avenues south.
Fourth Street is expected to reopen by 5 p.m. today.
