Two face joint trial in slaying of couple

FESSENDEN, N.D. – A man and his fiancee charged in the deaths of a Wells County couple will be tried together in Devils Lake, a judge has ruled.

Judge James Bekken, in an e-mail to attorneys and court workers on Monday, said the trial of Aron Nichols and his fiancee, Tamara Sorenson, of Fargo, would be moved from Wells County to Ramsey County.

Bekken granted prosecutors’ motion Friday to join the trials.

Bekken said the trial is slated for March 12, and would end “on or before April 7.” Bekken said he would use Devils Lake for pretrial conferences, beginning in December.

Prosecutors allege the couple schemed together to kill Donald Willey, 70, and his wife, Alice, 67, in April. Authorities said the Willeys were shot and their farm home near Sykeston was set on fire.

Nichols has pleaded not guilty to murder charges. Sorenson has pleaded not guilty to being an accomplice in the slayings.
